Japanese Name:

蛍光灯

Romaji Name:

keikoutou

Description

↓↓
A fluorescent light is a type of electric light that produces illumination by passing an electric current through a gas, which then emits ultraviolet light. This light causes a special coating inside the tube to glow, creating visible light. Fluorescent lights are energy-efficient and commonly used in offices and homes.

History

↓↓
In the 1850s, the phenomenon of fluorescence—where a material absorbs ultraviolet light and re-emits it as visible light—was discovered. This led to the development of gas discharge tubes that could produce visible light from UV light. In 1934, General Electric (GE) in the United States developed the first practical fluorescent lamp. This new type of lighting was more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs and had a longer lifespan, making it highly desirable. After World War II, fluorescent lights became widely used in commercial settings, offices, factories, and public spaces due to their superior energy efficiency and longer lifespan compared to incandescent bulbs. Over time, fluorescent lights were improved and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were introduced. These smaller versions made it easier to use fluorescent lighting in homes and smaller commercial spaces, expanding their popularity.
