Koinobori are carp-shaped windsocks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Children's Day on May 5th. They symbolize strength, courage, and success, inspired by the carp’s ability to swim upstream. Families display colorful koinobori to wish their children a healthy and successful future.
History

Koinobori originated during the Edo period (1603–1868). Families began flying carp-shaped flags to wish for the healthy growth and success of their children, inspired by the Chinese legend of a carp that could swim upstream and become a dragon.
Traditionally, the largest black carp (magoi) represents the father, the red or pink carp (higoi) represents the mother, and smaller carp represent the children. Today, koinobori are displayed across Japan every May, and they remain a symbol of family and hope for children’s growth.
