Description

↓↓
Kabuki is a traditional Japanese form of theater known for its stylized drama, elaborate costumes, and distinctive makeup. It combines singing, dancing, and acting to tell stories, often based on historical events or legends. Kabuki performances are lively and highly expressive.

History

↓↓
Kabuki originated in the early 17th century (Edo period), founded by Izumo no Okuni, a female performer who staged dances and plays. Initially performed by women, kabuki later became an all-male performance art due to social regulations. Male actors specialize in roles for men (tachiyaku) and women (onnagata). Kabuki became a popular entertainment for the general public and evolved with distinctive conventions, stage techniques, and artistic styles. Today, it is recognized worldwide as a symbol of Japanese traditional performing arts and is designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Heritage.
