History
↓↓
Petunias are native to South America, especially Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. They were discovered by European explorers in the 18th century and brought back to Europe.
The name “petunia” comes from the Tupi–Guarani word “petun,” which means "tobacco"—because petunias belong to the same plant family as tobacco: Solanaceae (the nightshade family).
In the 19th century, botanists began breeding petunias to create new varieties with different colors, patterns, and flower shapes. Today, petunias come in many colors, including pink, purple, white, red, and even striped or ruffled varieties.
