Description

↓↓
A volcano is a mountain or hill that forms when molten rock, ash, and gases from beneath the Earth's surface erupt through an opening. Volcanic eruptions can release lava flows, ash clouds, and pyroclastic materials. Volcanoes are found around the world, often along tectonic plate boundaries, and can have both destructive and beneficial effects on the environment, such as creating new land and enriching soil.

History

↓↓
The word volcano comes from “Vulcan,” the Roman god of fire. Volcanoes have existed since the Earth was formed about 4.5 billion years ago. Ancient peoples often explained eruptions as the actions of gods or spirits. In recorded history, major eruptions such as Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 shaped human understanding of their power. Scientific study of volcanoes began in the 17th–18th centuries and has since developed into the modern science of volcanology.
