Polite Refusal (Invitation/Request)

Polite Refusal (Invitation/Request)
Japanese
それはちょっと…
Sore wa chotto...

Lesson & Usage

  • [English equivalent: "I'm afraid that's a bit difficult" or "I'm not sure if I can."] This is the most famous "soft No" in Japan. Instead of saying "No" (Iie) directly, which can be seen as rude, you leave the sentence unfinished to let the other person understand you are declining.

Culture & Etiquette

  • Maintaining social harmony (Wa) is vital in Japan. Directly rejecting an invitation is often avoided to protect the other person's feelings. "Chotto" (a little) acts as a cushion, signaling a "No" without causing a social clash.
