JLPT N5
Thank you(Casual)
Japanese
ありがとう
Arigatou
Lesson & Usage
- This is the most common way to say "Thank you" to friends, family, and colleagues of equal or lower status. In a casual setting like a shop or with neighbors you are close to, "Arigatou" is warm and sufficient. To make it more polite for teachers, bosses, or strangers, always add "Gozaimasu" at the end.
Culture & Etiquette
- "Arigatou" originally comes from the word "Arigatai," which meant "rare" or "difficult to exist." It expresses the feeling that someone's kindness is a rare and precious thing.
