JLPT N4
The Essential Work Greeting
Japanese
おつかれさまです
Otsukaresama desu
Lesson & Usage
- [English equivalent: "Hello," "Hi," "Good job," or "See you."] This is the most crucial multi-purpose phrase in Japanese society. It is used when passing colleagues, answering a work phone, or leaving for the day. It literally means "You are tired," but functions as a way to recognize and appreciate the other person's hard work and contribution to the team.
Culture & Etiquette
- Japan has a long-standing culture of "empathy" (Omoiyari). In a society that values the group over the individual, recognizing another person's fatigue or effort is seen as the highest form of respect. By saying this, you are acknowledging that the other person is contributing to the team's success.
