Description

Basketball is a fast-paced team sport in which two teams of five players each compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opponent's basket (a hoop suspended 10 feet above the floor) while following a set of rules. The objective is to outscore the opposing team within a set time period.

Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.
He created the game to keep students active indoors during the winter.
The original game used a soccer ball and peach baskets as goals.
Basketball quickly spread to schools and colleges across the U.S.
The first professional leagues began forming in the early 1900s.
In 1946, the NBA (National Basketball Association) was established.
Today, basketball is a global sport played by millions around the world.
