History
- Curling originated in Scotland in the 16th century. The earliest recorded game dates back to 1541, with evidence of curling stones found on frozen ponds and lochs.
- The sport was traditionally played outdoors during winter on frozen bodies of water. Early stones were simple and varied in shape and size.
- In the 19th century, curling clubs formed in Scotland, and standardized rules were developed. Scottish immigrants brought curling to Canada, where it became very popular and is now considered a national sport.
- Curling was included as a demonstration sport in several Winter Olympics before becoming an official Olympic sport in 1998 at the Nagano Games.
