Description

↓↓
The high jump is a track and field event where athletes try to jump over a horizontal bar set at various heights without knocking it down. Competitors run toward the bar and use a technique called the “Fosbury Flop” to clear it by arching their back and jumping headfirst. The bar is raised progressively, and the athlete who clears the highest height wins. The event requires speed, strength, and agility.

History

↓↓
Ancient Roots: The high jump has its origins in early athletic competitions, including ancient Greece, where jumping over a bar was part of various festivals. However, the technique was much more rudimentary compared to modern styles. Early Techniques: In the 19th century, high jumping was done using a "scissors jump", where athletes leaped over a bar with a basic two-footed takeoff and legs scissoring over the bar. Introduction of the "Fosbury Flop": The modern high jump technique, known as the Fosbury Flop, was popularized by Dick Fosbury at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Fosbury revolutionized the sport by jumping over the bar backward, arching his back, and landing on his back— a technique that drastically improved jumping heights.
