History

Rugby’s origins trace back to 1823 at Rugby School in England. According to popular legend, during a game of football (soccer), a student named William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it, creating a new style of play.
The sport developed through the 19th century as schools and clubs codified the rules. In 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was established in England to govern the sport.
Rugby split into two main codes in 1895:
Rugby Union, which remained amateur for many years.
Rugby League, which became a professional version with slightly different rules.
Rugby spread internationally, especially to countries like New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, France, and Wales.
The first international rugby match was played between Scotland and England in 1871.
Rugby Union became an Olympic sport in the early 20th century and returned as Rugby Sevens in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
