History
↓↓
The origins of soccer can be traced back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations such as China (cuju), Greece, Rome, and Mesoamerica played various forms of ball games using feet.
However, modern soccer as we know it today began in England in the 19th century. During this time, different schools and clubs played their own versions of football, each with different rules. To unify the sport, the Football Association (FA) was founded in 1863 in London, establishing the first official rules of the game, now known as Association Football—the origin of the word "soccer" (from "assoc.").
The sport quickly spread across Europe, South America, and beyond, becoming the world’s most popular sport. The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded in 1904 to govern international competitions.
The first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay, and it has since become the biggest sporting event globally. Soccer is also a major event in the Olympic Games.
