Tennis (tenisu in Japanese) is a sport played either between two players (singles) or two teams of two players (doubles). Players use rackets to hit a small, felt-covered ball over a net, aiming to land it in the opponent’s court without being returned. Matches are scored in points, games, and sets, and tennis is played both recreationally and professionally around the world.
History

Medieval Origins:
Tennis originated in France during the 12th century, where it was first played with the hand instead of a racket. The game was called jeu de paume ("game of the palm"). By the 16th century, rackets were introduced, and the game evolved into real tennis, played indoors.
Modern Lawn Tennis (19th Century):
The modern version of the game, known as lawn tennis, was developed in England in the 1870s. Major Walter Clopton Wingfield patented a version of the game in 1874, which became widely popular in gardens and sports clubs.
Growth of International Competition:
The Wimbledon Championships, first held in 1877, is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament. Tennis became a global sport, with major competitions including the French Open, US Open, and Australian Open, collectively known as the Grand Slam.
