History
↓↓
The roots of manga can be traced back to ancient Japan, where early forms of illustrated storytelling appeared in works like the Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga scrolls from the 12th century, often called Japan’s earliest “manga.”
The modern manga industry began to develop in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, influenced by Western comics and Japanese ukiyo-e (woodblock prints). Early pioneers like Rakuten Kitazawa helped establish manga as a popular art form.
After World War II, manga exploded in popularity, thanks to artists such as Osamu Tezuka, often called the “God of Manga.” Tezuka revolutionized the medium with cinematic storytelling techniques and created classics like Astro Boy.
