History
↓↓
The role of security personnel dates back to ancient times. In early civilizations like Ancient Egypt, Rome, and China, rulers employed guards to protect palaces, temples, and important individuals. For example, the Roman Praetorian Guard protected emperors, while ancient Chinese dynasties had imperial guards.
During the Middle Ages, watchmen were assigned to patrol towns at night to prevent fires and crime. These early security roles were community-based and often informal.
The concept of private security began to take shape in the 19th century, especially during the Industrial Revolution, when factories, railways, and banks needed protection. One of the first major private security firms was Pinkerton National Detective Agency, founded in the United States in 1850. It provided security services, including guarding and investigations, and even protected U.S. presidents.
